3am hostel chai
Hostel chai at 3am tastes better than any café in the city. Same chipped cup, same kettle, same five people who should be studying. I'm going to miss this more than the degree.

In 10th class I went to the same tuition academy every single evening just because she sat two rows ahead of me. I never said one word to her. Years later, I still can't hear a generator start without thinking of those evenings.
I chose engineering because everyone in my family said doctor or engineer, nothing else. Third year now and I still sketch in the back of every lecture. I wish I had argued, just once.
She remembers exactly how I take my chai: two sugars, extra patti. I have never told her that I don't actually like sugar. I just like that she remembers.
Some nights I sit on the roof during the power cut and the whole street goes quiet. No fans, no TV, just people talking on other roofs. It's the only time my head feels clear.
Back in 9th class I wrote her name on the last page of my Urdu notebook, then panicked and turned it into a drawing of a mango. That notebook is still in my cupboard. The mango is terrible.
To the person who shared their samosa with me at the bus stop in first year: you probably don't remember, but that was the day I decided not to drop out. Thank you.
We talk every night after 1am because that's when the load shedding ends and the WiFi comes back. Three years now. Nobody at home knows. I still don't know how to tell Ammi.
Every morning I wait at the van stop five minutes longer than I need to. Same van, same seat, same headphones. One day I'll say salaam. Probably not tomorrow.
I told my whole family I topped the mock exam. It was out of 25. I got 21. They are distributing mithai to the entire street and I don't know how to stop this.
Abbu, I know you worked double shifts so I could go to university. I never say it, but I see it every time you fall asleep in your chair before dinner. Shukriya. One day I'll pay you back.
I never told my nani how much I loved her parathas. I always just said "theek hain". She's gone now. If your grandparents are still around, call them today and say it properly.
You said "kal baat karte hain" in 2019. I'm still waiting for kal.
My best friend moved to Canada after FSc. We used to walk along the canal every Friday evening. I still go sometimes and send her a photo of the same bench. She always replies with the same emoji.
My friends threw me a surprise birthday in the library and we got kicked out within four minutes. Best four minutes of the whole semester.
